NY Street Style/Trends

I noticed the splashes of reds and yellow and oversized coats during NYFW. As also seen during the runway shows, fur/faux fur was also everywhere. I would have liked to have captured more photos and still working the courage to go up to people before I miss the opportunity! That was one struggle I found with beginning the street style photography section of the class.

Another trend for Fall '12

Altuzarra Fall 2012

Bill Blass Fall 2012
Bill Blass Fall 2012
Tracy Reese Fall 2012
Diesel Black Gold

Another look which caught my eye for the Fall 2012 season is the strong military inspired look, focusing more on the strong navy blues, compared to the past camo and olive green colors.  The military look always continues to hold strong in the commercial world and I can see this having a lot of influence.

Fall/Winter 2012 NYFW: Red-Orange & Indigo

Besides the splashes of plums and pinks and bright reds, the two colors that were also appearing across the runways were red-orange, also known as "blood orange" and it's perfect complementary color, indigo. Over-sized wool coats and various textures/prints remained bold and styled with a neutral colored shoe.  Dennis Basso on the other hand enhanced his neutral palette with splashes of red-orange with his accessories and lip color. I can see these colors having a strong commercial viability; the colors are strong and bold, but not as bright as the neon and pink. This may attract consumers that want a strong color that is more wearable.

Decided to have a nice Earl Grey tea

There is something about  Greene St in NYC that inspires me. Walking along Greene St on a late Wednesday afternoon, it almost seems perfect.  Although the buildings look similar, the colors and architecture vary immensely. The various store fronts along the way are also a plus.

Shopping Profile: Jaimie Love

Where are you from: Calgary, AB Canada

Current location: New York City

Do you have a fashion blog?  j. loves style

What drives your purchases?
What doesn't drive my purchases! If I see an accessory, cool print or top, the first thing that comes to mind is how I can style and mix it with my existing wardrobe.

Shopping Desires:
God! Okay, I buy things that make me feel happy, so whether that is a certain color, or print; I'm usually driven by pieces that make me feel happy. I like accessories that pull together complete outfits. I like the little things that add to an outfit.

How do you react to trends?
I'm usually slow to pick up on a trend. I don't necessarily follow what's on trend at a given time. If there is a specific trend that I like, I tend to buy pieces within that area. For example, The Aztec trend. I'll buy pieces along that theme.  I feel like I buy trends when they are no longer in trend anymore.

Fave brands, if any?
My favorite brand would be Ann Taylor Loft. I'm also going to say J Crew. I like the simplistic, classic sort of  style.  I can accessorize classic, chic and simple styles with accessories; a piece of jewelry, handbag, shoes.

Favorite online shops:
None, really.

Fave item to buy each season:
Fall- Boots
Winter- A Coat
Spring- I love Spring dresses, but dont necessarily look for new ones every Spring.
Summer-  Purse or bag, I like two switch up from a basic black or brown and switch to a bright colored bag or a pattern/print.

Can't live without:
My knee high boots!

Where do you find most of your wardrobe pieces these days?
Lately I've been shopping at local thrift stores and flea markets. I like the idea of mixing vintage with new items to complete a look. I like to balance classic, timeless pieces, with something very trendy at the moment.

"Love" the clustered necklace.
"Love" the bold red with the muted tones.
"Love" the Navy stripes.
"Love" the floral.

Thank you Jaimie!

Emerging Trend: The High-Low Hem

The “high-low hem” or as others may call it, “the cascading tail” is a trend that sticks to mind after eyeing and scanning the various pieces seen in high-street stores; Zara, Forever 21 and Anthropologie to name a few. And while strolling through the New York neighborhoods seeing more than a few girls chatting with their girlfriends pretending to listen, it seems as if they are really fixated on their hem lines. One word, it definitely screams confidence, even in the Winter time.

Although I was eying every Parisians' stylish outfits during my trip to Paris last Spring, I ended up taking photos of interiors, antiques and explored many furniture shops.  Paris is a constant inspiration.
